Catholics why do you eat fish on friday and during lent?

I am Orthodox so I am not asking the reason for fasting- we fast wensday and friday and during advent as well as lent and other parts of the year- just that the Orthodox Church any thing with a backbone is forbidin during a fast.

So when and why did you add fish to the lenten menu.

When whatever pope made this rule, he just happened to have connections with the fish industry.

don%26#039;t eat me|||God wants spiritual fruit not religious nuts, xx|||Not all of us do but it is basically because for one thing fish is often the poor persons meat and two in the past it was heavily salted fish and therefore not a tasty treat. We often eat only a bean soup and bread in our house on Wednesdays and Fridays.|||It has nothing do to with fish and everything to do with NOT eating red meat. Historically, fish was cheap and red meat was not.

There are several reasons why we are asked to fast during Lent:

First, we abstain from meat on Fridays so that we can cleanse our bodies in preparation for the Eucharist on Sunday.

Second, we are asked to abstain from meat one day of the week, like Fridays, and the money we would have spend on that meat is given to the poor. There are millions of people in this world who get to eat meat for maybe one meal in an entire week. By giving up meat once a week and giving that money away to the needy, we are helping to feed the world%26#039;s hungry population.

Third, simply by giving up meat once a week, we are increasing the supply of it world-wide (there are a billion Catholics in the world). An increased supply of meat also helps to feed the poor.

Fourth, in addition to giving up meat on Friday, we are asked to give up something else for the period of Lent (40 days, there are many Biblical references to 40 days being a significant time period). Again, the money we would have spent on that thing we gave up we are to give to the poor.

Lastly, you will notice that many different Catholics give different answers to this question. That is because Vatican II gave more liberty to each individual parish and bishop and priest and it is up to him to decide what he will ask his congregation to give up and observe for the Lenten period. They are not wrong answers, just different. Some parishes ask their congregation to give up meat every Friday during Lent, some only ask for it on Ash Wednesday and Holy Thursday.|||Because Jesus fed the 5000 with just with a few pieces of bread and 3 fish- I think.|||Because fish is the only meat we can eat on Fridays during lent.In the bible, it said that Jesus feed the people fish and bread with his magic when there wasn%26#039;t enough food before. So that is why that we can eat fish on Fridays, and that is also the reason why that we can%26#039;t have meat on Fridays.|||I am a catholic,i don%26#039;t think there is any staunch reasons behind that, but isugest that it is their doctrine.there is a great disparity between fish and meat, for instance vegetarians eat fish instead of meat.Again i sugest that catholic believed that there is less diference between animal%26#039;s meat and human flesh hence both are animal and have blood in them,so Jesus is on the cross dropping his precious blood for me and you,we should not eat anything that has the blood in them.|||Catholicism and orthodox are both cults that teach a false gospel of works (%26quot;sacraments%26quot;) that leads to the eternal lake of fire (Galatians 1:6-9).

So when you eat fish or meat will make no difference when you%26#039;re in hell. Jesus said eat whatever you want, whenever you want.|||When I went through RCIA I was told that Western Culture does not eat fish on Friday during Lent. Other areas of the world may give up fish for Lent.

The reason being, the West tends to eat more red meat. In cultures where fish is the main source of protein, it is more of a sacrifice to give that up.|||That%26#039;s a very interesting question.|||a billion catholics worldwide according to last ent wife?

you know world poverty, diesase and famine could be ended right now, if only the pope would recant the law against condoms......
